WhatsApp Integrations

You can connect a Searj bot to WhatsApp using Meta WhatsApp Business, Twilio WhatsApp, or the experimental WhatsApp Web QR connection.

Experimental WhatsApp Web QR option

⚠️ WhatsApp Web QR is in beta. It uses a WhatsApp Web session through a Chromium worker, not Twilio or the Meta Cloud API. Sessions may expire, numbers may need to scan again, and limits can change based on WhatsApp policy.

How to connect

  1. Open the dashboard and select your bot.
  2. Go to the Integrations tab.
  3. Choose the WhatsApp Web QR card.
  4. Click Generate QR or Refresh QR.
  5. Open WhatsApp on your phone, go to Linked devices, and scan the code.

Expected states

  • Waiting for scan: the QR is ready and must be scanned from the phone.
  • Connected: the session is ready to receive and send messages.
  • QR expired: generate a new QR code.
  • Error or disconnected: refresh the QR or contact support.

Searj automatically tries to keep scanned WhatsApp Web QR sessions attached. If the API server or Chromium worker restarts, Searj reattaches the saved session when the linked-device data is still valid. If WhatsApp requires a fresh QR scan, the dashboard will show that state.

Returning from human handoff to the AI agent

If a WhatsApp conversation is handed to a human agent and the customer no longer wants to wait, they can send a clear command like "back to ai" or "cancel handoff". Searj ends the active handoff request and confirms that the customer can continue chatting with the AI agent.

Which option should I use?

  • Meta WhatsApp Business: best for official Cloud API production use.
  • Twilio WhatsApp: best if you use Twilio and need advanced delivery tracking.
  • WhatsApp Web QR: useful for quick setup without API keys, with session limitations understood.
